The Economist New Media Award: Wikileaks
Having faced down an attempt by an investment bank to have it shut down, wikileaks continues to be an invaluable resource for anonymous whistleblowers and investigative journalists.
Wikileaks director of investigations Julian Assange even attended to accept the award — although according to one of the judges of the event, he was prepared to be sued at any moment:
Seconds before stepping on stage he whispered, “Someone may lunge at the stage to present me with a subpoena. I can not allow them to do this and shall leave if I see them”.
Also in attendance was a reporter from Chinese-American broadcaster New Tang Dynasty Television. They got an interview with Assange:

Awards also went to the leader of the All-Burma Monks Alliance, an investigative journalist whose book about a murdered Guatemalan bishop influenced elections in that country, and a filmmaker who created a documentary about three people struggling with the collapse of Iraq.
